University of Kansas

Asst/Assoc/Full Professor of the Practice

Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) at The University of Kansas (KU) is seeking outstanding candidates for an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Practice in the areas of structural engineering and engineering mechanics. The target starting date is January 1, 2025 or August 18, 2025. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

Appointment level will be based on an applicant’s scholarly and teaching record and practical experience. All Professor of Practice positions, regardless of rank, are non-tenured positions appointed for a three-year limited term period; however, the CEAE department has a strong tradition of employing non-tenured faculty long-term. Due to the percentage of effort focused upon instructional duties, all applicants must possess outstanding teaching skills and teach 9-12 credit hours of regularly scheduled classes per semester.

Job Description

80% - Teaching
Teach courses totaling 9-12 credit hours per semester in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Architectural Engineering (ARCE) and Civil Engineering (CE) programs in engineering mechanics and structural engineering analysis and design. Teaching responsibilities include enhancing and improving curriculum and advising students on course selection.

20% -  Service
Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, serve on graduate committees and other departmental committees, work with student organizations, and collaborate with faculty and staff in enhancing the curriculum, recruiting highly qualified students, and with promotional activities. In collaboration with departmental leadership and faculty colleagues, support online course-only master’s degree programs by assisting with student recruitment and advising, and developing relationships with regional consulting and construction companies. Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair, such as providing general internal service at KU and at the department, school and university levels.
